The History
The company was founded in 2009 by Jonathan Harris and six other individuals with a common vision, and had its first fundraiser production called Telling the Story in June of 2010, a collective of scenes and songs showcasing around 60 talented artists in the national capital region. 9th Hour is currently embarking on its second season of theatre (each season runs from January to December) beginning with an award-winning adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment in March, 2012. 9th Hour just completed its 2011 and inaugural season, consisting of a diverse range of productions in a variety of venues and locations across the region. The first production, Eyes Upon the Cross, was a gritty and contemporary look at the crucifixion story from the varying perspectives of those who might have been there, performed both at The Gathering House and the Richcraft Theatre at the Shenkman Arts Centre in April. Children's Letters to God was an off-Broadway musical for families, featuring an entire cast of young artists between ages 10 and 15, and was performed for schools as well as at The Gathering House and Centerpointe Theatres in September. The final show of the season was an intimate Christmas musical based on the short stories of O. Henry called The Gifts of the Magi. Packed with both ironic humour and tender moments, it was performed at The Gathering House in Chesterville and additional times while touring across the region in November.
9th Hour exists to creatively engage the art of story telling in order to explore, examine, and express questions of faith and spirituality, including the person and characteristics of God. The mandate allows the company to be diverse in its creation and production of artistic works, incorporating dance, music, and other artistic elements in telling the story to a wide range of audiences. Future plans include initiating dance theatre and children's theatre divisions.
